Carmelo Anthony Will Win Scoring Title As Kevin Durant Rests
Carmelo Anthony of the New York Knicks will win his first ever NBA scoring title after it was announced that Oklahoma City Thunder forward Kevin Durant will not play in his team’s final game on Wednesday night against the Milwaukee Bucks, ESPN reports.
Durant had won the last three scoring titles, however Anthony went on a tear at the end of the season to surpass Durant—Anthony is averaging 36.9 points in the month of April compared to Durant’s 26.1. On the year, Anthony is averaging 28.7 points to Durant’s 28.1, and even if Anthony went scoreless in his team’s last game he would still finish the season averaging 28.2 points. It should be noted, though, that Durant has played 14 more games than Anthony, who missed time with various injuries, and has scored 300 more total points.
Anthony will become the first New York Knick to win a scoring title since Bernard King, who beat out Larry Bird for the 1984-85 crown with an average of 32.9 points per game.
Both Anthony and Durant’s teams head into the NBA Playoffs with outstanding records. The Thunder are first in the Western Conference with a record of 60 wins and 21 losses, and the Knicks are second in the Eastern Conference with 53 wins and 28 losses. And while it will be difficult for the Knicks to knock off the Miami Heat, led by LeBron James, and reach the NBA Finals, it's certainly worth imagining just how entertaining an Anthony-Durant matchup would be come June.
