Kate Mara sparked a frenzy among diehard Fantastic Four fans when she appeared to claim that the movie would not be based on anything specific that happens in the comic books.

Kate Mara: Fantastic Four Comments Clarified

Mara had been speaking to Esquire Latin America when she was asked about the Fantastic Four movie’s reverence to the Marvel comic books. In addition to admitting she’s not a comic book fan herself, the translation of her quote implied that director Josh Trank had told her he wouldn’t be using the comic books for much more than general inspiration.

“I’ve never been a fan of comics, I’ve never actually read one. I was going to for this movie but the director said it wasn’t necessary,” Mara was quoted as saying. “Well, actually [Josh] told us that we shouldn’t do it because the plot won’t be based on any history of anything already published. So I chose to follow his instructions.”

Mara added, “The one fact is I am a fan of comic book movies, so it’s very exciting to be part of a movie like this.”

On Thursday, Mara’s rep reached out to clarify the House of Cards actress’ statements, telling Entertainment Weekly that Mara had merely said that the Fantastic Four movie wouldn’t be based on one single comic; it would draw plot points from the entire canon of graphic novels.

Fantastic Four is slated to premiere June 19, 2015.
