Justin Bieber revealed why he cried after his VMAs performance during a fun-filled appearance on The Tonight Show.

Justin Bieber Explains Why He Cried At The VMAs

Straight off the heels of his explosive performance at the MTV Video Music Awards, Bieber stopped by The Tonight Show, where the singer exchanged banter with host Jimmy Fallon and opened up about his emotional moment at the VMAs.

Bieber returned to the Video Music Awards Sunday to give the debut performance of his new single, “What Do You Mean?” After the performance, Bieber shocked fans and viewers when he began to cry on stage. When asked about the moment, Bieber told Fallon that he was just overcome by the support he felt from the audience.

“It was so overwhelming for me, everything — just the performance. I missed some cues, so I was a little disappointed at that, and just everyone and just their support. I was, honestly… I just wasn’t expecting them to support me in the way they did. Last time I was at an awards show, I was booed,” Bieber said.

Bieber hasn’t had the best relationship with the public in recent years. After a string of embarrassing stunts, including being caught on tape urinating in a mop bucket and drag racing in Florida, Bieber became better known for his immaturity than his music, something he seemed aware of going into this performance.

“I think, it’s just like, I’ve worked so hard at this album. I’ve worked so hard at just becoming the man I want to be come, and then stepping into situations, you just can’t help but feel judged. So, I was just feeling judged and wanting to win so badly, and just wanting to do what I love so badly that I just put everything on the line,” Bieber continued.

Bieber also opened up to Fallon about his past indiscretions, saying he was just pushing the boundaries, making mistakes like any normal millionaire teenager. “I just went through a place of just trying to figure it out and making decisions. You have to figure out what you’re okay with and you’re not okay with, but you have to test the waters. I just happened to be in the spotlight, in front of cameras all the time, and they caught all those moments,” Bieber said.

When the audience laughed, Bieber called them out jokingly, saying, “You’re saying you didn’t have those moments?”

“Yeah, no, everyone — well, not as much as you did, but we had those moments,” Fallon added, eliciting even more laughs from the crowd and from Bieber.

During his stop by The Tonight Show, Bieber also faced Questlove in a drum-off and revealed the release date of his new album: Nov. 13.
