Johnny Depp, who’s been spotted rocking a women’s engagement ring lately, explained the reason for his unusual new jewelry item on the Late Show with David Letterman.

Johnny Depp's Engagement Ring

Depp recently became engaged to actress Amber Heard, leading some to speculate that they’d exchanged diamonds – or that he’d been borrowing the rock he gave her. The truth, however, is that the first ring he purchased didn’t fit Heard, but it fit him.

"I have a female engagement ring," the 50-year-old actor admitted to David Letterman on Thursday's Late Show.

Letterman deadpanned, "It's not typical for a man to wear an engagement ring, is it?"

Depp admitted it wasn’t, adding, "It was too big for my girl," and revealing that guessing someone’s ring size isn’t as easy as he’d predicted. Instead of returning the ring, the Pirates of the Caribbean actor slipped it on his own ring finger and discovered it was a perfect fit.

"I put it on," he told Letterman. "She has the other one that fits."

Despise the unusual appearance of a large engagement ring on a man’s finger, Depp says he hasn’t gotten too many questions about it. "I think people are scared to comment. 'Why? Why is a grown man wearing a woman's engagement ring?' Because it fit."

Depp, Heard's Engagement

Heard was first spotted with a diamond on her finger in mid January, though reports said that they’d been engaged since Christmas Eve. Apparently it wasn’t Depp’s first proposal to Heard – just the first time his Rum Diary costar said yes. They made their first public appearance together in January after months of unconfirmed reports that they were dating.

Depp was previously in a 14-year relationship with Vanessa Paradis, with whom he has two children. Heard was previously in a longterm relationship with photographer Tasya van Ree.
