Jeremy Irons will join Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck and Jesse Eisenberg in the Man of Steel sequel that will feature both Superman and Batman.

Jeremy Irons Joins Superman/ Batman Movie Cast

On Friday, Warner Bros. Pictures presidents Greg Silverman and Sue Kroll announced Irons’s casting as Alfred. Director Zack Snyder underscored why Irons was perfect for the character.

“As everyone knows, Alfred is Bruce Wayne’s most trusted friend, ally and mentor, a noble guardian and father figure,” Snyder is quoted in the announcement. “He is an absolutely critical element in the intricate infrastructure that allows Bruce Wayne to transform himself into Batman. It is an honor to have such an amazingly seasoned and gifted actor as Jeremy taking on the important role of the man who mentors and guides the guarded and nearly impervious façade that encapsulates Bruce Wayne.”

Irons’ illustrious career has found him on stage and screen over the years. For his work in the 1990 movie Reversal of Fortune, he won both the Academy Award and Golden Globe for actor in a leading role. In the role of Alfred, he is following in the footsteps of Michael Caine.

It was also revealed on Friday that Eisenberg, who gained mainstream success for The Social Network, would play Lex Luther. The role has previously been played by Kevin Spacey and Gene Hackman.

Affleck was announced as the successor to Christian Bale’s Batman in August.

Cavill made his debut as Superman in the 2013 action flick Man of Steel.
