Jeff Garcia Says Tim Tebow's Presence with Jets 'Just Brings Distraction'
Jeff Garcia thinks the New York Jets should get rid of Tim Tebow immediately in order to foster a healthy quarterback competition, and help Mark Sanchez’s development.
“If there's going to be competition at the position, it's not going to come from Tim Tebow,” Garcia told USA Today. "Having Tebow there (last season) just became more of a distraction, more of a circus show. Obviously, it's their decision. But from an outsider looking in, having Tebow there doesn't bring anything positive. It just brings distraction."
The Jets have said that they have will have an open quarterback competition, with the likely contenders for the position being Sanchez, as well as Greg McElroy and David Garrard. Tebow is not being considered a serious option and the Jets have tried to trade Tebow, however, thus far no team has been interested in the popular, albeit polarizing, quarterback.
The Jets’ new offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg is implementing the West Coast offense, and Sanchez has been working with Garcia, a former Pro Bowl quarterback who played for Mornhinweg during his career.
Last season, Sanchez threw only 13 touchdowns against 18 interceptions, while completing less than 55% of his passes. He was eventually benched by Jets coach Rex Ryan in favor of Greg McElroy. The Jets finished 6-10 last season.
Unless something drastic happens over the weekend, Tebow is expected to attend the Jets' voluntary offseason workouts on Monday, Apr. 15.
