Homeland, starring Claire Danes and Damien Lewis, will return this September following the second season’s shocking finale, which left 200 attendees at the memorial for Vice President Walden (Jamey Sheriden) dead, including David Estes (David Harewood).

Since the blame for the terrorist attack was placed on Brody, Carrie helped him get off the grid in Canada before returning back to D.C. with the intention of proving his innocence. “It’s pretty bleak in the very beginning because she’s gone off her meds for lots of reasons that she believes really strongly in,” Danes said during the Television Critics Association press tour. “Both Saul [Mandy Patinkin] and Carrie share an enormous and profound amount of guilt and responsibility for [the bombing].”

Brody won’t even appear on the screen, let alone in Washington, during the first couple of episodes of Homeland’s upcoming season. “Brody is on the lam,” explained Lewis about the decision. “He’s the most wanted criminal in the world so he has to lay low, and I think when you do see Brody I think you will see — and hopefully it will be of interest to the audience — is what state he will be in.” Neither Brody nor the producers confirmed the first episode Brody will appear in.

As for the Brody family, the trajectory of their lives will continue to be a big part of the show, though producer Alex Gansa admitted that they weren’t initially sure they wanted to pursue the story. “We felt we had to honor these people we created and what their lives would be like after this devastating attack,” he said. Gansa went on to reference the public interest in the families of those who do (or are accused of) unspeakable acts – namely Sandy Hook’s Adam Lanza and the Tsarnaev brothers, who allegedly bombed the Boston Marathon in April.

Earlier this year, Showtime released a press release for the upcoming season: "Homeland Season 3 opens during the aftermath of the horrific terror attack that decimated the U.S. intelligence apparatus, and prompted a global manhunt for the world’s most wanted terrorist — Nick Brody. As Carrie and Saul begin to pick up the pieces of their shattered professional and personal lives, they are swept up in the political and media firestorm surrounding the terror attack and the subsequent search for Brody’s whereabouts.”

Homeland’s third season will premiere on Showtime Sept. 29 at 9/8c. It will serve as the lead-in to new Showtime series Masters of Sex starring Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan.
