Funeral Held For Mexican Singer Jenni Rivera
The funeral for Mexican Banda singer Jenni Rivera was held Wednesday in Los Angeles, Calif. The Gibson Amphitheater held 6,100 fans, friends and family members looking to pay their last respects.
Family members urged the crowd to keep Rivera’s name alive and that her memory would live on. “The best thing you ever taught me is when you fall, you get back up,” daughter Jacqie Melina Campos said. “So that’s what I’m going to do.”
There was also a moment of silence in honor of the shooting victims in Newtown, Conn. “I know my mother would have been heartbroken to hear about something like that,” her son Trinidad “Michael” Angel Rivera said. “Because even though for me, it was a tragedy to lose my mother at 27 years old, there were mothers who lost their children before they got the chance to find out who they were going to be, whether they were going to be singers or doctors. … They didn’t have a chance to live.”
Rivera died this past Saturday when the plane she was in crashed in a mountainous area of northern Mexico. Her lawyer, publicist and makeup artists also perished in the crash. The plane she had been in had been damaged in 2005 when it struck a runway in Amarillo, Tex. The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the plane along with the Drug Enforcement Administration. The DEA seized two planes from aviation company Starwood Management, the owner of Rivera’s plane.
