Dakota Johnson was inevitably asked about a Fifty Shades of Grey sequel while walking the red carpet at the Oscars Sunday night, where she admitted that more movies weren’t a certainty.

Fifty Shades of Grey Sequel In Jeopardy

E.L. James penned a trilogy of erotic romance novels starring Johnson’s character Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey, played by Jamie Dornan in the film. After Fifty Shades of Grey, there’s Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed. On the red carpet, ABC’s Lara Spencer, trying to move past the awkwardness of an exchange between Johnson and her mother Melanie Griffith, pointed out that two more movies would be on the way – but Johnson said that the follow-up films weren’t a done deal.

Part of the reason why there might be a delay in confirming a sequel could be director Sam Taylor-Johnson‘s lack of interest in directing another film due to issues with James. “Sam won’t be back for the Fifty Shades sequels,” a source told The Sun. “She wants out and Universal knows that’s the right decision.”

“Directors usually have the ultimate control over what goes on in a movie, but in this case Erica was questioning literally the most minor things,” the source added. “She was able to have the final say over the cast, the costumes and, crucially, the script.”

There’s also a rumor now circulating that Dornan, who along with Johnson was a big fan of the director, wants out of the franchise. According to reports, Dornan’s wife Amelia Warner isn’t keen on him continuing to shoot the explicit sex scenes that would be required of him in the future films.

“Jamie thought he movie would skyrocket his career. He tried to assure Amelia nothing would change but women all over the world now lust after Jamie,” a source told Australian magazine NW. “She hasn’t seen the film and I don’t think she will to be honest.”

The insider also said that Dornan isn’t keen on working with Johnson in another film, claiming that it was difficult to act opposite her. “Jamie does not think his performance was bad – instead he blames Dakota and says it wasn’t possible to have chemistry with her,” the insider said. “He says Dakota gave him nothing to work with.”

Fifty Shades of Grey, currently in its second week in theaters, has brought in nearly $130 million at the box office.
