Ed Sheeran dressed up as Little Orphan Annie for a sketch on Jimmy Kimmel Live Thursday night, appearing onstage in the character’s signature red dress.

Jimmy Kimmel introduced the bit, commenting on NBC’s decision to cast Allison Williams to play Peter Pan in their live broadcast of the beloved musical.

“NBC announced recently they’re planning a live televised production of the musical Peter Pan, and what’s interesting about that is Peter Pan will be played by the very talented Allison Williams, who is a woman…That’s great, but tonight I have the honor of announcing that my network, ABC, has decided to top them,” Kimmel told his audience.

Kimmel then announced that ABC would be putting on a live production of the famous musical Annie starring Ed Sheeran in another effort of gender-swap casting.

Sheeran emerged wearing a short red dress and dragging a stuffed dog, Sandy, behind him. After the applause died down, Sheeran opened his mouth to begin singing Annie’s signature song, “Tomorrow,” before stomping off stage.

“Annie is furrier than Sandy, it turns out,” Kimmel quipped.

Before the show aired, Sheeran teased fans, telling them he would “dress up like a famous broadway character” on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

While on the show, Sheeran did a short interview with the late night comedian before performing two hits off his newest album, X, “Don’t” and “Sing.”

Unfortunately, Sheeran will not be reprising his short-lived role as Annie in the upcoming feature-film adaptation starring Jamie Foxx and Quvenzhané Wallis.

Annie will be released in theaters on Dec. 19, while NBC will air Peter Pan Live on Dec. 4.
