The Showtime hit series Dexter, starring Michael C. Hall, will end after this season, the show’s eighth.

Showtime has released a two-minute preview, which features a tense interaction between Dexter and his sister, Debra (Jennifer Carpenter), in a convenience store, which highlights the the siblings' icy relationship.

Over the last seven years Dexter has been nominated for 25 Emmy Awards (winning four) and ten Golden Globe Awards (winning two). Hall himself has been nominated for five Emmys for his performance in the show’s lead role. Dexter was also awarded a Peabody Award in 2007.

Dexter redefined the genre, by taking the anti-hero to new heights and pushing the boundaries of the television landscape,” Showtime chairman Matthew Blank said in a statement. "Dexter paved the way for the next generation of award-winning hit Showtime series, and its cultural impact will be felt for years to come.”

Once the announcement was made, Hall expressed uncertainty about his future, but excitement over the current state of television.

“I don’t imagine I’ll jump right back into something, but such amazing things are happening on television, to rule it out entirely would be silly,” Hall told Entertainment Weekly. “I look forward to finding out what life feels like without Dexter.”

Dexter’s final season premieres Sunday, June 30 on Showtime at 9 p.m. ET.
