Dario Franchitti, the three-time IndyCar Series champion and estranged husband of actress Ashley Judd, crashed into the barricades at the Grand Prix Houston on Sunday and sustained serious injuries. Thirteen spectators watching from behind the barricades were also injured, three of which were taken to the hospital.

In the final lap of the race, Japanese driver Takuma Sato bumped Franchitti’s car as he tried to pass him. Franchitti’s car then flew off to the left and up into the fencing that rises up from the concrete barricades. Debris from the fence and the vehicle flew into the stands, wounding those watching the race. Most of the injured viewers were treated at the scene, but three were taken to the hospital where they were listed in good condition, reported CNN.

Franchitti was transported to the hospital following the crash, where it was learned that in addition to suffering a concussion, he’d also fractured his ankle and his spine. Fortunately, according to Dr. Michael Olinger, Franchitti’s back injury will not require surgery. He was kept overnight on Sunday at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center.

Judd, who announced plans to divorce in a joint statement with Franchitti back in January, took to Twitter last night to thank fans for their support and share that she was on her way to see her husband in the hospital.

Franchetti and Judd have been married for 11 years. During their marriage, Franchetti won the Indy 500 in 2007, 2010 and 2012. Prior to his accident, he was on track to best his 2012 season.
