Daniel Von Bargen Dead At 64

Von Bargen passed away Sunday following a long illness, his friend, actor Bob Colonna, told The Hollywood Reporter. Complications from diabetes are thought to be the cause of death, according to IMDB.com. Back in 2012, von Bargen was left severely injured after shooting himself in the head in an apparent suicide attempt following news that he’d have to have two toes removed due to his diabetes, and having already lost a leg to the disease.

“I feel a huge wave of sorrow and relief at the passing of this remarkable man,” Colonna said. “I treasure the years when I worked with him at Trinity Rep and in a couple of TV films. I admire his excellent body of work in the movies. And I mourn for the darkness and pain that were his final years. God bless him. He was a hell of a guy.”

In addition to his memorable appearances during the last season on Seinfeld as Mr. Kruger, Von Bargen appeared on the small screen in Malcolm in the Middle, Law & Order, The West Wing and NYPD among other shows.

Von Bargen’s big screen credits include Amistad, Philadelphia, Broken Arrow, Super Troopers, Robocop 3, Snow Falling On Cedars, O Brother, Where Art Thou? and The Postman. His last picture was London Betty in 2009.

After graduating from Purdue University, von Bargen, a Cincinnati native, joined the Trinity Square Repertory Company in Providence, R.I. His big theater break came opposite Christopher Walken in David Mamet’s Uncle Vanya. He went on to star on Broadway satire Mastergate, a performance which opened doors in Hollywood. He returned to the stage for the last time in 2013 in The Treatment.
