Actress and singer Christina Milian is throwing herself into a career comeback that includes an E! TV series and an album featuring Lil Wayne.

Christina Milian On New Show & Album

Milian, her mother and her sisters will all be starring on an E! docuseries called Christina Milian Turned Up. In addition to covering her dynamic with her family members, the series will also follow Milian’s return to music and her love life. For Milian, the hardest part of filming was getting used to the cameras following her interactions with her family.

“It was a challenge for all of us – being vulnerable and being ourselves and be the most human that we most possibly could because that’s what is going to translate,” Milian explained to uInterview exclusively. “There were moments initially that we were little bit perturbed and a little awkward, but at that time you just have to get used to the cameras and you just got to live life. At the end of the day, people are going to watch the show and they are going to fuss and say whatever the hell they want, but as long as you stay true to who you are, I think that comes across far, far better.”

Thankful for the strong foundation she has with her tight family, Milian said that doing the reality show at times put a strain on their relationships, but that it ultimately brought them all a bit closer together.

“In hindsight, all the crazy moments, it all played a major role in bringing us closer together,” Milian explained. “We all lived together, we were all very codependent on each other and in time we became very innocent, and at the same time we got to revisit the family values that we once had. So it brought us back together and brought that back into play. It was a good experience.”

Milian’s Music Comeback

Milian, who appeared on Dancing With the Stars’ 17th season, is waging a career comeback in a major way after taking the time off to spend more time with her daughter Violet despite her own awareness that coming back from a hiatus can be a bit more difficult for female entertainers. Now, the “AM to PM” singer already has  a huge song with Lil Wayne.

“I love Wayne. He’s a regular person. That guy is a hard worker. He works his ass off. He pretty much has a schedule of work, work, work, work, work, 24/7,” Milian dished about the hip-hop artist. “Now working with him, he definitely helped to motivate and put me into full drive as well. Doing “Start a Fire” kind of happened out of nowhere. That was a demo I had for a long time, the record label heard it and weeks later Wayne is on it and all of a sudden three days before the American Music Awards they tell me I’m gonna be performing on the award show.”

“You just kind of be prepared for what might happen when it comes down to working with Wayne because riding that wave is a very fortunate wave to be able to be on,” Milian added. “The song is a big song and I’m looking forward to shooting a video for that and I’m happy that he is putting it on the album.”

Christina Milian Turned Up will premiere on E! Jan. 18 at 10/9c.

Q: On the show your mother and your sisters are part of the action. What was that like? -

We wanted to strangle each other. It was a challenge for all of us. On top of that, being vulnerable and be ourselves and be the most human that we most possibly could because that’s what is going to translate. There were moments initially that we were little bit perturbed and a little awkward, but at that time you just have to get used to the cameras, and you just got to live life. At the end of the day, people are going to watch the show, and they are going to fuss and say whatever the hell they want, but as long as you stay true to who you are, I think that comes across far, far better. As a family, yeah of course we’re going to have a little drama between all of us. We’re going to have attitudes, but that’s all stuff that we know about each other. With a tight family, we’ve got a great foundation built. The incentive is to make this obviously a successful show and just be ourselves. It took me a long time to even convince my mom to do this. So to work together is just a good feeling. So we finally got to do it. We had fun doing it. In hindsight, all the crazy moments, it all played a major role in bringing us closer together. We all lived together, we were all very codependent on each other and in time we became very innocent, and at the same time we got to revisit the family values that we once had. So it brought us back together and brought that back into play. It was a good experience.

Q: Were there any moments that you didn’t want to see on air that were recorded? -

Oh, heck yeah! I don’t even know what I can give away. There is a huge argument that I have with my sister and my mom. It was my sister and my mom; against those two. It got very heated and loud. This was not about the cameras. This is about real life. When it’s happening, you don’t care because you’re trying to get your point across and then the next day you wake up and you’re like, “Holy cow, what the heck happened, now the world is going to see this.” Then you’re like, “Oh well, this is us.” Whatever, at this point it’s entertainment cause it’s done. We’ve all moved on past it. There are a couple of funny things of stuff I would do with my friends or privately with my family, but now the world is going to see it. Even little things, like oh, “I wanna bigger butt,” just little things like who would actually say that. We say and do things that, you know, we opened up to the world for sure.

Q: Did you have a moment that was your favorite while filming it? -

I have a lot. For my birthday, I threw a big birthday party in Hollywood, and it was an art gallery theme. I did it in conjunction with a magazine cover I did. The magazine is called Persona and so a lot of the reason why I was really happy with it was, that it was an art gallery theme, so there were all these pictures from the magazine, but it was also a reflection of where I was going with my music and my career and to me the new, grown Christina Milian that people are going to see now.

Q: In the promo for the show, you mention that it’s your last chance. What did you mean by that? -

I feel like the last chance to come to my music. For me, musically, I’ve been around for a long time and people are waiting for my music to come out. I like to treat everything like it’s the last chance. Every day is your last chance at living because you don’t know what’s going to happen next. For me, it’s treating every moment like it’s your last so you better be great. You know, I wanna make a mark, so that’s what I mean.

Q: Do you feel that female singers have a harder time coming back from some time off like this? -

Yeah, I think so. I think we probably do because there is a small group of successful ones. I think that there isn’t a lot of room for it and you have to be great. So, because guys can go run around and take their shirts off and show their 6 packs and go off of that but, for a girl we have to be amazing singers and great performers and everyone has a different thing that makes them special. So I think there is a little bit of competition out there when it comes to women and there is a lot of judgment when it comes to being a female artist. But at the end of the day as long as you’re doing your best, you can only pray for the best.

Q: Why did you decide to take off the time when you had your daughter? -

I thought it was important as a mother. I’ve been working my whole life. I know what it is like to be away from family. I felt like my sisters were like my kids. But being away from them so much with work, you lose a big portion of your life when you are just focused on work only. I think it is important to be human and to be cooking or cleaning and learn these pieces of life, because really it’s all going to stick. When your work is said and done it doesn’t mean you have to stand up for it. As a mother I think it is important to build a core of family values with my daughter and for her to know how important she is and for us to build that relationship. That was a big deal for me. I’ve been working on my life and focusing on my career my entire life; it’s time to make sure that family is with my daughter. When you meet Violet you see exactly what that time off meant and what that did.

Q: What did you learn from your time away from the spotlight? -

I just want to focus on taking control of my life and becoming independent and knowing that every decision I make from this point on is for us, for her and I and not live for everyone else. I have a great appreciation for the things in life that make us human. I value that more then anything.

Q: Does it change the way you approach relationships now that you’ve been out of the spotlight? -

I don’t know if it changed the way I approach relationships. I think divorce probably changed the way I view relationships and then having a child in general. You are not going to take everyone just taking up your time. But taking that time off, you do come to recognize the kind of people you do want in your life. You don’t want anybody wasting your time; you don’t have time for that.

Q: You’ve got a new album coming out. Tell us what we can expect from it? -

The new album is the new, young, fun, fierce woman that I am today. It is the last six months of my life. It is a diary of my life, whether it be my breakup to finding new love and being happy and experiencing life in a whole new light and just becoming a woman. It’s a very honest approach in being a woman today. I used to write poems that sounded tacky and now I write poems that are about real things. I get into detail, so I think it’s important. I have a lot of girlfriends and we talk about a lot of stuff. I think music is definitely something that helps people grow. I want to be able to do that through my T.V. show and music.

Q: Now, you got to work with Lil Wayne on “Start a Fire.” What was your experience like? -

I love Wayne. He’s a regular person. That guy is a hard worker. He works his ass off. He pretty much has a schedule of work, work, work, work, work, 24/7. Now working with him, he definitely helped to motivate and put me into full drive as well. Now that he’s definitely focused on my career and helping that grow, I feel very involved now with my new album and doing “Start a Fire” kind of happened out of nowhere. That was a demo I had for a long time, the record label heard it and weeks later Wayne is on it and all of a sudden three days before the American Music Awards they tell me I’m gonna be performing on the award show. So, you just kind of be prepared for what might happen when it comes down to working with Wayne because riding that wave is a very fortunate wave to be able to be on. The song is a big song and I’m looking forward to shooting a video for that, and I’m happy that he is putting it on the album.

Q: We always like to ask everyone we interview– I know you are really known for your great fashion – do you have a favorite new dress, handbag or pair of shoes that you love, or all three? Who are the designers, what are your favorite things in all those categories? -

When it comes to shoes, I am super into, gosh, I mean I love sneakers and I love heels. When it comes to heels you can’t go wrong with a pair of Louboutins. They are probably my first choice when it comes to dressing. Some nice red bottoms and a heel. I am always into a nice pair of pumps. Ya know if you can find a great pair of black patent leather pumps, I think they kind of go with everything. Or even Yves Saint Laurent have great heels, I love their heels.

Q: For handbags and dress? -

For handbags I like, I am super into MCM. I wear a lot of their book bags and their purses. I kind of have a little collection. MCM has a nice edgy, really cool variety when it comes to my style. When it comes to getting dressed, I have a lot of different styles and my taste is a kind of variety of things. I actually just started my own clothing line. It has everything from street wear, to casual wear to dresses and stuff like that, so I’ll have to say my own clothing line cause I’ve been rocking it every day. It’s called ‘We Are Pop Culture’

Q: Cool. Where is it sold? -

It is sold on wearepopculture.com. We are also sold now in Beverly Hills at Kyle by Alene. There are a couple of different stores, and that wasn’t even the incentive, but now the stores are coming to us, which is great, but mostly online.
