Cher called out New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and Iowa Governor Terry Branstad on Twitter this week for legislation regarding the treatment of pigs.

Chris Christie Vetoes Outlawing Of Pig Gestational Crates

On Friday, Nov. 28, Christie vetoed a bill that would outlaw the use of pig gestation crates in New Jersey. The bill would outlaw any crates or enclosures that would allow a pregnant pig “in a manner that prevents the sow from turning around freely, lying down, standing up, or fully extending the limbs of the animal.”

Christie vetoed the bill under the pretense that it was a distraction, saying it was time for legislators “to turn their attention to actual problems facing New Jersey.” New Jersey is home to about 9,000 pigs, a relatively low amount that caused many to speculate Christie had an ulterior motive for vetoing the bill – his bid for President in 2016. Iowa, home to the first Presidential caucus, has 20 million pigs in farms across the state, and hog farming reportedly contributes $7.5 billion to the economy of the state. Governor Branstand of Iowa reportedly strongly advised Christie to veto the bill.

Cher Blasts Gov. Christie And Gov. Branstad On Twitter

Following the veto, Cher took to Twitter on Tuesday, Dec. 2, to express her outrage, first ranting about the treatment of pigs, and then specifically confronting Christie and his political ties to Iowa, calling the Governor a “despicable bully” and telling him to “[forget] POTUS.”
