Celebrities Tweet Cheers At Demise Of DOMA, Proposition 8 At Hands Of Supreme Court
Celebrities and politicians alike took to Twitter to express their joy over the Supreme Court decisions to strike down the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and effectively gut California’s anti-gay marriage Proposition 8. DOMA had restricted federal marriage benefits to opposite-sex couples and required that the inter-state marriage recognition be restricted to opposite-sex marriages. Prop. 8 dictated that only opposite-sex marriages would be legally recognized in California. Here’s a sample of the reaction:
President Barack Obama:
Lt. Gov. of California Gavin Newsom:
Jesse Tyler Ferguson:
Remember the old days when #DOMA was around and gay people couldn't get married in California? Crazy right!?— Jesse Tyler Ferguson (@jessetyler) June 26, 2013
Don't wanna traffic in stereotypes but let's be real: I'm gonna love a gay wedding.— Lena Dunham (@lenadunham) June 26, 2013
DOMA has been held unconstitutional, 5-4 decision authored by Justice Kennedy. Oh happy day!— George Takei (@GeorgeTakei) June 26, 2013
Kristen Bell – who previously said she would not get married until marriage equality was law in California:
Hey! You know what? The Kids Are All Right! Defense of marriage falls! We chose love over hate! Goodbye #DOMA— Mark Ruffalo (@Mruff221) June 26, 2013
