Catherine Zeta-Jones has landed the part of Colombian drug lord Griselda Blanco in the forthcoming biopic The Godmother.

Catherine Zeta-Jones Is 'The Godmother'

Zeta-Jones' casting as Griselda Blanco in The Godmother was announced Wednesday by Deadline. Eva Sørhaug will direct the film from a script penned by Frank Baldwin. Daniela Cretu is producing, while Nicholas Piliggi will serve as the executive producer on the picture.

The film will trace Griselda’s rise to the upper ranks of the Medellin drug cartel in Colombia. As the only woman to achieve such power in the cartel, she was a ruthless kingpin. Throughout her dominance in the 70s and 80s, Griselda hired numerous assassinations, earning her among other more sinister nicknames, the title of Cocaine Godmother.

Griselda started selling cocaine in New York City in the early 70s, traveled back to Colombia after an indictment and eventually to Miami, where she set up what would become a multi-million dollar empire. Her success came to a halt in 1985 when she was arrested and subsequently served 18 years in prison. Upon her release, Griselda was deported back to Columbia. In 2012, she was killed in a drive-by shooting.

Zeta-Jones' most recent roles were in Broken City, Side Effects and RED 2. She won an Oscar in 2003 for playing Velma Kelly in Chicago and was nominated for a golden Globe in 2001 for her part in Traffic.
