'Blade Runner' Oscar Pistorius Heads To 2012 London Paralympics

Even though Oscar Pistorius, 25, didn't place a medal in his 4x400m relay event for South Africa in the 2012 London Olympics, there are more sports ahead for the famous "Blade Runner" in the upcoming Paralympic Games, which kick off in less than two weeks on August 29, 2012 and last until September 9.

Pistorius held the distinction in 2012 of being the first double-leg amputee to participate in the Olympics when he qualified for the relay event. After barely making it to the finals due to an unforeseen accident on the track during the semifinals, South Africa ended up coming in eighth out of a field of nine in the 4x400, though the team established its season's best time at 3:3.46 seconds.

Unlike the other Olympic sprinters on his relay team, Pistorius isn't headed home just yet. He will next compete in the 100m sports event (T44 class for below-knee amputees) and the 100m relay in the Paralympics. Pistorius has previously dominated in his Paralympic events, winning three gold medals in the 2008 Beijing Games and one gold and one bronze medal in the 2004 Athens Games.
