Ben Affleck will play Batman and Bruce Wayne in Zack Snyder's sequel to 2013's Henry Cavill Superman vehicle Man of Steel.

Snyder revealed earlier this year at Comic Con that his follow up to Man of Steel would unite justice league heroes Superman and Batman. Since Christian Bale seemed content to leave his Batman days behind with Christopher Nolan’s trilogy, rumors about who would pick up the torch began to swirl.

Prior to Warner Bros. announcement of Affleck’s somewhat surprising casting, Ryan Gosling and Josh Brolin had been speculated as frontrunners for the coveted part, reported The Hollywood Reporter. One of the fears plaguing Batman fans about Affleck taking on the iconic role is that it will be a Daredevil part 2. Daredevil, which Affleck starred in opposite his now wife Jennifer Garner, was a major box office flop – not to mention what the critics had to say about the star’s woody performance.

Since Daredevil and that other movie Affleck would rather have erased from his resume – Gigli – the Boston-born actor has carved his way back into the Hollywood elite. Both in The Town and Argo, Affleck proved himself a capable actor and a truly talented director. His turn as Batman could either be the icing on his comeback cake or send him back to the hole post-J.Lo he’s recently dug himself out of.

The Man of Steel sequel, which is expected to hit theaters sometime in 2015, will return Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane.
