Aaron Hernandez Indicted On Murder Charge For Slaying Of Odin Lloyd

08/23/2013

Aaron Hernandez, who was formerly a promising tight end for the New England Patriots, was indicted on first-degree murder Friday in the shooting death of semi-professional football player Odin Lloyd.

In addition to the murder charge, Hernandez faces five gun charges. If convicted of first-degree murder, Hernandez’s mandatory sentencing would require he gets life in prison without the possibility of parole. He is currently being held without bail and is concurrently under investigation for a downtown Boston 2012 double homicide, reported the Boston Globe.

“The double homicide on Herald Street remains under investigation,’’ Suffolk DA spokesperson Jake Wark said. “No charges have been brought as of today, but the investigation by Boston police and the Suffolk district attorney’s office remains very active.’’

Ernest Wallace, a friend of the former NFL star, has also been indicted on charges pertaining to the death of 27-year-old Lloyd. He’s been charged with being an accessory after the fact of first-degree murder by a Bristol grand jury, which could see him serving seven years behind bars.

Hernandez’s cousin Tanya Singleton was indicted in Fall River Superior Court on Thursday after allegedly refusing to testify, and will be arraigned on a contempt charge on Friday.

On June 17, Lloyd’s body was found in an industrial park not far from Hernandez’s North Attleboro, Mass., home. Keys to a car rented in Hernandez’s name were found in Lloyd’s pocket, leading police to the professional athlete’s residence. After a week of investigations, Hernandez was arrested and charged with murder

“Aaron Hernandez is an innocent man as we stand here today,” Michael Fee, Hernandez’s attorney, told reporters following the hearing on Thursday. “Based on the evidence that we’re aware of today, we do not believe the Commonwealth has significant evidence to carry the burden of proof,” Fee said. “There’s been an incredible rush to judgment.”

Hernandez made 175 receptions for close to 2,000 yards and had scored 18 touchdowns since the New England Patriots drafted him in the fourth round in 2010. Last August, Hernandez signed a $41.1 million seven-year contract. Following his arrest, the New England Patriots released him from their roster.
