Chris Brown Gets An 'A'
A Los Angeles judge gave singer Chris Brown, 20, high marks Thursday for completing 100 hours of community service and seven domestic violence counseling classes. "We have a progress report and it's extremely favorable," Judge Patricia Schnegg said. "That's excellent." Brown was sentenced to six months of community service after assaulting his then-girlfriend, singer Rihanna, 21. Since then he has been washing cars and cleaning graffiti as part of his sentence. Miley Cyrus: I Hate Vampires
Miley Cyrus doesn't have Twilight fever – in fact she never even saw the first movie. "I've never seen it and nor will I ever," Miley tells Cleveland's Q92 radio. "I don't believe in it. I don't like vampires. I don't like the wolf that pops out of the screen when I'm watching my TV at night. I don't like it. I don't want anything to do with it. I don't like the shirts. I don't like any of it." (Photo: WENN)
U BLOG: How Miley Went From First to Worst
by Audrey Szepinski
Sixteen-year-old singer/actress Miley Cyrus used to be a valued role model for tween girls across the country, but her reputation has slipped of late. It’s slipped so much in fact that those very same girls who used to idolize Miley have just voted her the “Worst Celeb Influence” in a poll on the AOL-owned teen website JYSK.com. With 42 percent of the vote, Miley ranks ahead of the infamous Britney Spears (think “If U Seek Amy”) and Kanye West, even after the Taylor Swift fiasco.
How did things come to this? Miley’s missteps are fairly obvious. There was that photo shoot in Vanity Fair, in which Miley posed topless and wrapped in a bedsheet. In an interview with WWD.com, Vanity Fair fashion and style director Michael Roberts insisted it was not a bedsheet but a “duchess satin stole, Champagne, specially made”—unfortunately, the public failed to take the quality of the sheet into account.
Then there was the photo of Miley sitting next to an Asian American boy and pulling her eyes slanted, a move that led to widespread accusations of racism. After that, Miley did a “pole-dancing” routine at the Teen Choice Awards, and showed a continued propensity for “stripper” moves and booty shorts in her “Party in the USA” music video and in the short “rap” video she created to explain why she decided to delete her Twitter account.
So, despite the saccharine wholesomeness of “Hannah Montana: The Movie,” kiddies and their parents alike are upset over Miley’s recent behavior. However, I tend to think that Miley’s former fans started the whole thing by getting a little too snobby. Miley used to be cool, she used to be alternative—Hannah Montana was certainly a revolutionary television concept and an example of some of the highest comedic and dramatic art of the decade. The show hasn’t changed a bit, but as its audience has grown, the original fans have grown claustrophobic and resentful. They’ve started to move on. Hannah Montana is just too trendy.
Desperate, Miley has taken some misguided steps in an effort to keep these more intellectual, art house fans in tow. She’s trying to show a darker and edgier side of herself. However, instead of pulling the alternative crowd back in, Miley has accidentally overstepped the bounds of tastefulness.
The immediate effects of being the “Worst Celeb Influence” are already showing. Miley’s nine-year-old sister showed up at a Halloween event last week wearing knee-high boots, a thigh-baring dress, and very red lipstick. It is now obvious that snobby fans are better left behind, but the damage to Miley’s reputation may be irreversible. Hopefully, Miley and other teen superstars will take a note—a pair of denim booty shorts is not an appropriate hand-me-down.
